Energy Efficiency – Building Regulations Part L

The Building Regulations are made under powers provided in the Building Act 1984. This applies in England and Wales. The majority of building projects are required to comply with them. They exist to ensure the health and safety of people in and around all types of buildings (i.e., domestic, commercial and industrial). At Lincolnshire Gas Training Scunthorpe, we offer one day courses that include training and assessment for Engineers to comply with Energy Efficiency (Building Regulation Part L), the ‘Conservation of Fuel and Power’.

As part of your training, we will discuss subjects such as heat loss, u-values of building fabrics, CO2 emissions, and energy performance measures that can be applied to your building projects moving forwards. You will then be required to undertake a theoretical assessment relevant to the prior training. Once successful, you will hold a recognised qualification that is valid for five years before requiring renewal.

It is also mandatory to comply with Building Regulation Part L when working in both Domestic Dwellings and Commercial markets when installing fuel burning appliances and installing heating systems. Appliances now must meet minimum efficiency targets set, in addition to further energy efficiency measures.

For example:
If a gas-fired combination boiler is installed in an existing dwelling, at least one of the
following energy efficiency measures, appropriate to the system, should be installed.
a. Flue gas heat recovery.
b. Weather compensation.
c. Load compensation.
d. Smart thermostat with automation and optimisation
