Most individuals will study their chosen trade whilst at sixth-form college and hold their trade qualification(s) from an early age. For the others amongst you who are looking to re-train and apply their life-experience to a new skill, there is an alternative route to gain your accreditation that we can offer. The IGEM approved Gas Safe Managed Learning Program we provide at Lincolnshire Gas Training is a recognised Level 3 route into the industry for candidates changing careers, mature candidates or those who do not hold an ACS or equivalent qualification but wish to gain one.
The course will include intensive training within our Scunthorpe training centre, in addition to candidates gaining work experience alongside a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Completion of this course enables the candidate to apply for ACS.
The routes candidates were permitted to take to gain entry into the gas industry were permanently changed as of October 1st 2018. As such, the only option available for new entrants who wish to train and work as gas engineers is via a Managed Learning Program or ‘MLP’. Our MLP mirrors the previous standard apprenticeship route, and offers a far broader range of learning compared to any ‘fast-track’ routes that have now (and correctly so) been deleted from our industry.
Candidates will be required to source an existing qualified gas engineer who can mentor them throughout this process. On-site training and experience are key to the learning process, and works in-hand with the training you will receive from us at our training centre in Scunthorpe. Most of the practical learning you will receive will be directly from your currently qualified engineer/mentor, though there are many varied tutor-led training days at Lincolnshire Gas Training (including distance learning methods) to cover all required theory and practical elements. The theory training takes place in our centre and is spread over a minimum six-month period, with eight weeks of classroom based learning, and a number of days distance learning in between.
During your MLP, you will build a portfolio of evidence covering various essential work modules.
The portfolio details the work you have carried out on site accompanied by photographic evidence. Once the portfolio has been completed, and we are satisfied that no further training from ourselves is required, dates are arranged for you to attend your gas diploma summative assessments. Following successful completion of these, you will then be eligible to apply for the ACS assessments.
Once the ACS assessments have been completed successfully, you (now a fully qualified UK Domestic Gas Engineer!) will then be eligible to apply for Gas Safe Registration (following receipt of your new certificate of competence sent from our awarding body).
To summarise: Upon successful completion of our MLP you would hold a level 3 nationally recognised qualification that would enable you to:
- Install Gas Pipework after the gas meter within the scope of IGE/UP/1B (Domestic gas tightness testing procedure)
- Install Gas Boilers (both Heat Only and Combination Boiler)
- Install Gas Fired Instantaneous Water Heaters
- Service & repair Open Flued and Room Sealed Gas Boilers
- Service & repair Room Sealed and Flueless Gas Fired Water Heaters
- Install, service and repair Domestic Cooking Appliances
- Install, service and repair Domestic Gas Fires
The timescales to complete the Lincolnshire Gas Training Managed Learning Programme can and will differ based on each potential engineer’s experience and self-commitment. We do have structured and proven programs in place however, so please be in touch to discuss what options are available to you and to verify timescales.
Please note that at Lincolnshire Gas Training we offer any ongoing technical support and/or guidance that you may need following your course with us. We understand the value of aftercare and how beneficial it is to gain some reassurance, or to simply enforce your decision on the job when you’re new to a trade. This support has no end date, and working together the industry standards can only improve with the quality of engineering we all deliver.
Please get in touch for an information pack or to have a conversation discussing your options. We always welcome visits to the training centre so you can view our equipment and environment first-hand (call for an appointment to drop in and meet the team).
